The Stick Rig - Update
Well, the RIG has changed substantially....no longer are multiple
computers being used. Thanks to the Intel Core2Duo E6600, plenty
of RAM and a good motherboard I am now happy to say that the computer
based audio component of the Stick rig is down to one 8-space rack case
(not including the power amp section....). The graphic above shows
the configuration of the computer rack system - excluding the monitor
and keyboard.. The difference in
performance between the Core2 and Pentium 4 CPU is significant. A
particular Guitar Rig patch I created called Ambient Wash used about 70%
cpu resources on the P4 - and only 15% on the C2D!
I've
been gearing my music rig to be as modular as possible. This is to
help get the most bang-for-the-buck as I can. So far I think it is
working well. The system is built using a modular concept.
The modules include: -
the computer-based audio module in an 8-space SKB rack. This has a
3-space rack mount, Core2Duo based computer, MOTU Midi Timepiece AV,
Behringer REV2496 reverb modeler, MOTU Traveler interface, Behringer
ADA8000 A/D/A and 2 x Roland GI-20 Guitar-to-MIDI converters.
There is also an RME HDSP 5296 card in the computer. (see picture above) -
the power amp system which includes a Crown XLS402 amp, DBX DriveRack PA
and a Behringer R1602 single-space 16 channel mixer. All of this
is in a 4-space SKB rack. This module currently drives two ACME
Low-B2 full range bass cabinets, each with 2x10" woofers, 1x5"
mid and a 1" soft dome tweeter. -
an analog input module which consists of two Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro
units and two Behringer Virtualizer Pro effect processors in a 6-space
SKB rack case. Analog is really not a true description of the
module because technically the signals are converted to digital inside
the modules. I call it analog though to differentiate it from the
computer based audio module. I
have the option of running the outputs of the computer module and/or the
analog module directly to the power amp module or to the studio mixing
board for playback through my studio monitors or recording.. I
have recently been using an Ampeg SVP Pro bass preamp with my 6-string
bass. This is plugged into the mixer in the power amp module as
well as my Roland V-bass and VG-88v2. This little package really
packs a lot of sonic power into a relatively portable package. I
have my bass fitted with a GK-2B pickup and I can also route my Stick
through it and the VG-88..
More
to come.....
